Debra was in the inaugural class of Seattle/King County Head Start, a national early learning program that provides comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parental involvement services to low-income children and their families. While on the Head Start Parent Council, Debra's mother learned leadership skills and was encouraged to become a teacher in our region, inspiring her children to reach for their own dreams.
Debra did just that.
She went off to college where she met her husband and the two started a family. Debra took time off to be a stay-at-home mom and raise their two children. When her kids were ready to enter college, Debra went back herself to Highline Community College and Seattle University, earning her degree in political science.
Currently, Debra works in the office of Congressman Adam Smith as his District Director, overseeing outreach and community engagement across the 9th Congressional District. She has worked for Congressman Smith in a variety of roles over the last 12 years and as his District Director for the last 3 years. Debra also was appointed in 2015 to the Board of Trustees for Renton Technical College. A former non-traditional student herself, Debra is passionate about ensuring education opportunity at every age.
